🌄8. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not steal. The eighth commandment forbids theft, that is, appropriating in any way that belongs to others. The types of theft are very diverse: 1. Theft, that is, stealing someone else's property. 2. Robbery, that is, taking someone else's property by force. 3. Sacrilege, that is, appropriating something sanctified by the Church's ownership. 4. Bribery, that is, illegally taking gifts from people to whom, by virtue of their position, they are obligated to do what is requested free of charge. 5. Parasitism, that is, receiving a salary for a position or payment for work, but failing to carry out the position or work. 6. Usury, i.e., taking large sums of money from those in need, taking advantage of another's misfortune. 7. Fraud, i.e., appropriating someone else's property through deceit. For example: evading payment of a debt; concealing something found without seeking the owner of the item or money; undermeasuring or underweighting when selling; withholding a worker's wages, etc.; and also when children are lazy in their studies, while their parents and society spend money on them, and teachers spend their labor. While prohibiting all forms of taking property from one's neighbor, this commandment commands us to be selfless (not greedy), honest, hardworking, merciful, and truthful. To avoid sinning against this commandment, one must love others as oneself and not do to others what one would not wish for oneself. The highest virtue, inspired by the eighth commandment, is complete poverty, that is, the renunciation of all property. However, the Lord does not obligate everyone to this virtue, offering it only to those who desire to attain the highest moral perfection: "If you want to be perfect, go, sell that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven" (Matthew 19:21). Many ascetics followed this Gospel advice, for example, St. Anthony the Great, St. Paul of Thebes, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and many others.
