Othala - Volbriöö valgus
As the final twilight of April descends, the atmosphere takes on an ancient, stirring quality: shadows lengthen, flames burn more vividly, and the night itself seems to breathe differently. This is no ordinary evening—it is Walpurgis Night, or Volbriöö in Estonian tradition, a time that stands apart from the everyday. It marks a threshold between light and darkness, spring and the remnants of winter, the visible and the unseen. On the night preceding May 1st, the Estonians would light maituli, ritual fires believed to guard against all that was harmful. These fires were not merely sources of warmth or light; they served as protectors—burning away disease, misfortune, and malevolent forces. Among the ancient Estonians, it was believed that only through purifying flame could one truly enter the season of renewal. May 1st, Volbripäev, was more than a date in the folk calendar—it marked the definitive triumph of spring. The season was welcomed not passively but through action: people made noise, rang bells, lit fires, and adorned their homes with fresh greenery to drive away evil and invite fertility. Spring was understood not simply as a season, but as a vital force—alive, assertive, and deserving of celebration. In medieval Estonian towns, the arrival of May was symbolically affirmed through the election of a May King and May Queen—figures who embodied the spirit of the season. In their honor, festivities were held: feasting, contests, and a traditional event called papagoilaskmine, where participants would shoot arrows at a wooden bird perched atop a pole. Although the image of witches flying through the night sky was a later addition to the Estonian worldview, it eventually found a firm place in local belief. Particularly in western Estonia and on the islands—such as Saaremaa—stories persisted of a place known as Loksperil, where witches and folk knowledgeable in the arcane would gather during these nights. According to legend, they would duel with swords and perform rituals, the flashes of which were said to appear in the sky as northern lights. It was believed that not only witches but also local landowners and wise folk would travel to Loksperil. This journey would often begin on the Thursday before Volbripäev, though some stories placed it during major seasonal celebrations, such as Christmas or Holy Week. Such beliefs reflect an ancient worldview where magic was not mere fantasy, but a natural part of life. Each region had its own sayings and omens for the day: In Haljala, it was said that if it rained on Volbripäev, the old witches were steaming in the sauna. In Kullamaa, the return of the swallows was celebrated as a sure sign of spring. In Torma, tradition dictated that it was time to plant potatoes—marking the start of a new agricultural cycle. Walpurgis Night in Estonia is not merely a date on the calendar. It is a symbolic turning point between the old and the new, cold and warmth, stagnation and renewal. It is a vivid reminder that in the heart of humankind lives an ancient memory—of nature, its rhythms, and the rituals that mark its transitions. Spring is not only about blooming; it is about cleansing, awakening, and embracing the elemental power of life reborn. #scandinavianmusic #nordicmusic #estonianmusic #norwegianmusic #ethnicmusic #paganmusic #nordicpagan #ancientsounds #folkmusic #darkfolk #nordicfolk #estonianfolk #norwegianfolk #vikingmusic #shamanicmusic #ritualmusic #ancienttraditions #mysticnorth #northernspirit #balticmusic #runicmusic #neofolk #tribalmusic #ancestralmusic #oldworldmusic #mythicmusic #sacredsounds #naturemusic #nordicatmosphere
