Following the massive "MeToo" movement in America following allegations of harassment and rape against film producer Harvey Weinstein, more and more affected women in Germany are also speaking out. And thanks to former "Bild" editor-in-chief Julian Reichelt, the debate surrounding workplace harassment has gained new momentum. But how systematic are these structures in the media world? Journalist Caroline Rosales, who herself worked for four years at Axel Springer Verlag, recounts several incidents that occurred during her career. These superficial and sexual criteria began with the application process. At the time, unlike other applicants, she didn't have to extensively promote her resume and writing, but was instead reduced to her appearance. This reduction continued throughout her entire career as a journalist. In addition to workplace remarks and inappropriate emails from colleagues, dinners with her boss were also part of the daily routine. In retrospect, she reflects on this past very differently, but at this point, fear and despair played a major role in influencing her. Melanie Amann, a journalist from "Spiegel," knows such stories from witnesses all too well. In Julian Reichelt's case, it was primarily slow processes that ultimately didn't end well for those affected. Reichelt deliberately started affairs with younger women in the "Bild" editorial office. These began with initial praise for their work performance, progressed to private coaching sessions, dinners, and more intimate activities. The victims had little chance to defend themselves, as Reichelt, at the top of the hierarchy, exerted immense power over the women. The "fuckability" of the women seemed to be Reichelt's main focus. But through the work of many journalists, including Daniel Drepper, who reported on Markus Lanz, this system was uncovered. Berlin-based columnist Hajo Schuhmacher is particularly concerned with the question of how systematically these power structures are exploited in the German media world and covered up by the executive suites. In the "Bild" worldview, it was Axel Springer Publishing's CEO Mathias Döpfner who fired Julian Reichelt, but still defends him. Döpfner believes the victims aren't real victims; the affairs were all consensual. Such statements shock Hajo Schuhmacher, because they once again reveal the power structures in the media world. Therefore, he also advocates for clarification and honesty among media companies.
