I finally fulfilled a longtime dream: joining a landing tour of the World Heritage site, Gunkanjima (Battleship Island), in Nagasaki. Seeing its melancholic yet powerful form in photos is one thing, but stepping foot on the island was another. I felt the immense energy of the lives once lived here and the true weight of its history—it's so much more than just a ruin. This video documents my entire journey, from the dramatic, last-minute tour booking to our departure from Nagasaki Port, where we saw the shipyards that supported Japan's modernization. We also pass by Takashima, the "mother island" of Gunkanjima, before finally landing on and cruising around the island itself. The guide's stories of the islanders' prosperous lives, their harsh working conditions, and the sudden, heartbreaking closure of the mine were deeply moving. I hope this video conveys the true soul of Gunkanjima and the "proof of life" left behind by the people who once called it home.
