Miyako Island Miyako Island is the central island of the Miyako Islands, 290km southwest of the main island of Okinawa, and is made of limestone from raised coral reefs. It has a subtropical oceanic climate. The highest elevation is 113m at Nakao Ridge, and the central area is called "Hirara" (Tairara) because of the flat terrain without mountains or rivers. While it is mainly engaged in agriculture, mainly growing sugarcane, mangoes, and tobacco leaves, and raising beef cattle, it also boasts the most beautiful ocean in Okinawa, and is crowded with people who enjoy marine activities such as diving, kayaking, and fishing, as well as tourists who enjoy relaxing resort stays. It is also known nationwide as a "sports island" that promotes the island through sports, such as attracting training camps such as the All Japan Triathlon Miyakojima Tournament and amateur baseball camps. Since 2008, the island has been proclaimed "Eco Island Miyakojima" and is working to create a sustainable island through environmental conservation and recycling of local resources. In October 2005, Hirara City, Shimoji Town, Gusuku Town, Ueno Village, and Irabu Town merged to form Miyakojima City. It is connected to Ikema Island, Kurima Island, and Irabu Island by bridges. Gusuku District is located in the eastern part of Miyakojima. Facing the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea, it is a purely rural area surrounded by a subtropical oceanic climate with a population of over 5,000. The average annual temperature is a warm 23°C, and the average annual precipitation is about 2,000 mm. The terrain is almost flat and made of highly permeable Ryukyu limestone, and most of the rainwater seeps underground, so there are no rivers. Agricultural production includes sugar cane, beef cattle, and leaf tobacco. You can experience the nature and life of Miyako Island, including Higashi-Hennazaki, which has been designated a national scenic spot, and the world's first large-scale underground dam, which was constructed to secure water for the island's daily life. Kurima Island An island located about 1.6 km southwest of Miyako Island. Locals call it "Fuimasuma." The eastern side is a cliff of about 40 meters, and it slopes gently to the south. Agriculture, mainly sugarcane, fruit, and tobacco, and beef cattle are cultivated here. According to old records, there was a small village at the edge of the coast, but it was washed away by the tsunami and became an uninhabited island. A brother and sister who came from Miyako Island became husband and wife, and their descendants are said to have prospered. It is also known as a landing place for migratory hawks and gray-faced buzzards. A 1,690-meter-long bridge was completed between the island and Miyako Island on March 13, 1995, and the number of tourists has increased. From 2011 to 2016, the prefecture is implementing the "Kurima Island RE 100% Self-sufficiency Demonstration Project," which aims to cover all electricity consumed in the prefecture with renewable energy, and the area is attracting attention as a symbol of the "Eco Island Miyakojima."
