She is remembered for playing the character of Doña Clotilde, The Witch of '71, in the series El Chavo del 8 (1973). In her youth, she was a guerrilla and fought alongside the Republic in the Spanish Civil War. After Franco's victory, she decided to emigrate to Mexico in 1947, where she became an actress and obtained Mexican nationality. Her career began with her starring in several film casts, making her debut in the 1955 film Maternidad imposible (Impossible Motherhood). In it, she was given a supporting role with very little screen time, but it earned her the title of one of the actresses who formed part of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. Some of her notable films include El diario de mi madre (1958), Misterios de la magia negra (Mysteries of Black Magic) (1958), El esqueleto de la señora Morales (1960), El padrecito (1964), Corona de lágrimas (1968), and El profe (1971). However, she achieved international success when she began working with Roberto Gómez Bolaños on El Chavo del 8, making her first appearance in an episode of that series in 1972. In addition to El Chavo, she also appeared in other Bolaños productions, including El Chapulín Colorado and Chespirito. María de los Ángeles Fernández Abad was born on July 30, 1924, in Madrid, Spain, to José Fernández and Manuela Abad. Her youth was spent during the Second Spanish Republic, and she joined the anti-fascist and anarcho-syndicalist guerrillas fighting against the fascism of then-General Francisco Franco, fighting throughout the war on the Republican side. Franco took power after the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939. However, her most important role was that of Doña Clotilde, the Witch of '71, the eternal lover of Don Ramón, a character played by her friend, the actor Ramón Valdés, in the series Chespirito from 1971 and later El Chavo del 8 from 1973. She got that role precisely thanks to Valdés, who introduced her to Chespirito. Fernández worked alongside Chespirito for 20 years, from 1971 to 1991. Fernández had a daughter named Paloma Fernández. 8​10​ On March 25, 1994, Fernández died at the age of 69 in Mexico City. The causes of her death included cardiac conduction disorders, acute respiratory failure, and chronic kidney failure.
