In 1849, Avtonom Soltanovsky arrived in Rivne, where he worked as a teacher at the local gymnasium for 15 years. He wrote his memoirs, which were later published in the journal "Kievskaya Staryna". Seventy pages of his text, as well as the memoirs of various gymnasium students and teachers, recreate terrible and impressive pictures of provincial life in the Russian Empire.
