DEG III Dynasty (Wilson) Compact Marching Trombone | Flugabone Review/Discussion
Seeing this instrument in the wild was a pleasant surprise. What had happened was I borrowed a school instrument to record a multitrack (link below!), and only after recording it, I found out it was a different flugabone (an Olds O-21, to be exact). After doing some research, I then found out that there was another horn at the school that was a Dynasty flugabone, which is much more rare. The article below has some information that you should check out about this horn and flugabones in general: https://tiffanyjohns.com/blog/flugabone Some more thoughts on the Dynasty: Definitely mouthpiece sensitive. I think it blends better with a deeper mouthpiece, but loses a lot of core to the sound. The shallower mouthpiece provides some better tone, but the articulation becomes super punchy (so now it sticks out). A pleasant surprise was playing the instrument softly! I was actually impressed with its pure tone. Intonation is okay... I'm sure you could devote many hours finding the perfect mouthpiece for the horn, but I don't have that many mouthpieces... Feel/response – Meh. Articulation felt very late to me when I first started messing with it. I got used to it, but it's still a little off-putting. The horn is also super heavy for some reason, which might cause the poor response issues. High register is of course super good. Low register – not so much. Sounds really bad in the low register, in my opinion. Now, I'm no expert on marching trombones, but given the fact that I’ve technically played two of them, between this and the Olds O-21, I would take this one. The Dynasty has a little better tone and feel, and even though it's way heavier and the build quality is a little less, the Dynasty sounds way better than the Olds does.
