【大英日本美術展】海を越えた襖絵、約150年ぶりの再会

From July 25th (Sat) to October 18th (Sun), 2026, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum will host "Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum 100th Anniversary Commemorative Exhibition: A Hundred Flowers in Full Bloom - Edo Paintings Across the Seas - The British Museum's Collection of Japanese Art." One of the highlights of this exhibition is the "Fusuma paintings that crossed the sea," which are being reunited after approximately 150 years. *This exhibition will tour to the Osaka Nakanoshima Museum of Art from October 31st (Sat) to January 31st (Sun), 2027. In September 2024, a press conference was held announcing that "the Fusuma paintings in the Miyakoshi family residence in Nakadomari Town, Aomori Prefecture, and the Fusuma paintings held by the British Museum in London, England, were found to be a series of works," which became a hot topic among researchers and enthusiasts of Japanese art. Furthermore, it is known that the opposite side of the painting in the British Museum's collection is held by the Seattle Art Museum in the United States. This means that these three fusuma paintings, separated across three countries, will be reunited for the first time in approximately 150 years. How did these fusuma paintings end up in such distant locations as Aomori, London, and Seattle? This video unravels the extraordinary fate of these fusuma paintings as they crossed the ocean and reveals surprising new discoveries.
