The BEST place for BIRDING in the SW???

After more than six months away from the camera, it felt amazing to get back out into nature — and there’s no better place to do that than RSPB Ham Wall, one of my favourite wildlife reserves in the Southwest. In this video, I spend a relaxed afternoon exploring the reserve, wandering between viewing spots and seeing what the day has in store. Spring is starting to wake up the wetlands, with plenty of wildlife around — from marsh harriers soaring over the reeds to great crested grebes beginning their courtship displays. I also stumble across a wonderful moment watching long-tailed tits busily building their nest, a real privilege to witness without disturbing them. Even with the main hide closed and a few camera gremlins trying to slow me down, the reserve still delivers plenty of magic: the call of a booming bittern in the distance, a rare full view of a water rail (not just the usual disappearing tail!), and the constant soundtrack of birdsong across the marsh. As the evening light softens, I try my luck with some backlit shots of northern shovelers before finishing the day with an incredible surprise — a huge starling murmuration swirling across the sky. A perfect ending to a peaceful day in one of the UK’s best wetland reserves. This trip wasn’t about getting the “perfect” photo — it was about enjoying the wildlife, shaking off the rust after time away, and remembering why I love being out here with a camera in the first place.
