Tools We Used For This Project • Heavy-Duty Drill • Mixing Attachment • Chalk Line • Tile Spacers (3/8") • Notched Trowel (3/8") • Tile Sponges • Level • Wet Saw 🧱 Preparing Surface If installing thin brick over a concrete floor, you may have to level any imperfections using a floor leveling compound. ⚠️ Clean surface to remove any debris or contaminants. 🧱 Dry Fitting Next, we "dry lay" the thin bricks over our concrete porch surface and use our 3/8" spacers to help guide placement. By dry laying, also known as dry fitting, the joints can be tightened or widened slightly between the thin bricks, ensuring a cohesive look and helping to reduce the number of thin bricks you may have to cut to size. 🧱 Applying Thinset Mix your thinset per manufacturer specifications. Then use your notched trowel to spread enough thinset for the bricks to adhere. Work in a small area so you can add the thin bricks before the thinset begins to dry. 🧱 Laying Thin Bricks Since we are applying thin brick to a concrete porch, use a leveler to make sure the bricks are even. When laying a corner or edge piece, make sure to back butter to ensure it will completely adhere to the surface. 🧱 Applying Grout Before grouting, scrape off any thinset before it dries on the face of the thin bricks. You can also remove any thinset with a nylon brush or pad. Then, vacuum the bricks to clean off any dust or debris before grouting. ⚠️ Apply a paver enhancer to keep some of the grout off the brick and seal the brick from the weather. You can apply it with a paint pad or roller; we used a paint pad in this video. Be sure not to get excess paver enhancer into grout lines to ensure the grout will adhere better. Now it is time to mix the grout. For the best application, follow the manufacturer's specifications. Apply grout to the thin brick using a grout float, working the grout back and forth until you fill all voids in the grout lines. Drag off any excess from the top of the brick surface to make it easier to clean after grouting. 🧱 Cleaning Carefully follow the grout manufacturer's instructions for excess grout removal. Use a sponge to clean the excess grout off the brick. You may have to do this multiple times to remove all the surface grout. 🧱 About Royal Thin Brick® Royal Thin Brick ® is a true extruded kiln-fired thin brick – not concrete or some other material made to look like brick.
