BIGBANG was the first K-pop group I ever liked, and the first full K-pop album I listened to was Still Alive. My first K-pop bias was T.O.P lol!!! When most Kpop acts were focused on bright pop sounds, YG was the only one embracing those dark, swaggy themes and that is exactly what drew me to their artists, especially BIGBANG and 2NE1. I have so much love and appreciation for this group. They have been through so much and imo this stage was long overdue. When it was announced last year they were booked for Coachella, I decided I had to go! I initially hesitated because I was diagnosed with a sun allergy a few years ago and Coachella Valley's temperature is notoriously hot. But around Feb, the thought of not seeing my number ones just kept bugging me so I signed up for the Week 2 waitlist. Luckily, I got off the waitlist right away. A few weeks before the festival, I had some personal stuff to deal with and was really considering backing out. But then I had already spent so much on camping gear and had watched 100+ videos and read so many blogs to prepare for my first Coachella and first solo camping trip (Virgo, type A here lol!!). So I just thought FUCK IT! Decided I'd deal with the personal stress when I got back. You only live once, right?! Lately, I have been living by that motto and every time I do something crazy that my introverted self would not normally do, it ends up being a core memory. (I will share more about my experience on first US solo camping / first Coachella / barricading for BIGBANG in my vlog soon!! 🫶) As for BIGBANG, watching the Week 1 stream made me a bit emotional. I totally get why Beliebers cry when they saw Bieber HAHAH. Having followed this group for so long, through diff stages of my life while living in the Philippines, actually seeing them live and hearing the songs that defined those times was overwhelming. My cousin and I were huge BIGBANG fans; when we were freshmen in college, we promised each other we would see them live once we started working. Unfortunately, she is living in Canada now and could not make it to Coachella, but we watched the Week 1 stream at the same time and we were reminiscing about our dream of seeing them. Also in a way, felt like this was a full-circle moment for me. I don't usually record during concerts. I only started doing it once like 3 yrs ago at a previous K-pop concert but it turned out great and people really enjoyed it so I keep posting for those who cannot go. As someone who loves to vlog and capture memories (what I share online is only a tiny fraction of the footage I record for my future self hahaha!), I have really enjoyed learning how to film better. I watched several tutorials and research regularly on best gear and apps to get the best shots. Standing there, I was so happy that I had the skills to record this monumental event properly for myself and other fans. Also, before I end this TED Talk haha I wanted to say I was internally screaming seeing “Good Boy” live. It’s one of my fave Kpop songs. That MAMA stage back in 2014 was definitely an S-tier live performance in K-pop!! The coolness of that stage can't be easily recreated because it wasn’t just the song, it was the peak of GDYB artistry. I rarely save videos I can watch online but I had that performance saved on my phone bcoz it’s just so effortlessly cool! So it was crazy, to say the least, to watch them live, with Taeyang giving 200% energy haha!! Anyway, so many emotions!! It has been the highlight of my year so far. THE REAL KINGS OF K-POP ARE BACK!
