In 1975, the 22-year old Tony Tan Caktiong decided to shell out Php 350,000 (Around 6,500 USD in 2019) and went on to franchise two Magnolia Dairy Ice cream parlors — The Cubao Ice cream house and the Quiapo ice cream house. Noticing that his competitors were gaining on him, he started asking his customers for feedback on how he can improve the shop further. They told him that they liked his ice cream, but they'd love it if he served hot meals. He listened to what his customers were asking for, and launched the Yumburger. This turned out to be an instant hit. The Yumburger's success kickstarted the rise of Jollibee. But in order to win in the Philippines, Tony Tan Caktiong needed to act fast because word was spreading that McDonald's was about to enter the country. McDonald's had a 23-year head start, and over 5,000 locations before it entered the Philippines. Its competitor was the 3-year old Jollibee. Tony Tan Caktiong had big plans for Jollibee, but he had two options: stand down or go head-to-head with McDonald's. He chose war.
