“The Path He Chose Is Quite Dangerous” – Afenyo-Markin Fires Back at Acheampong

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly criticised comments made by the 2nd Deputy Majority Whip and MP for Bia East, Richard Acheampong, during discussions marking International Widows Day. Afenyo-Markin argued that many widows, particularly younger women in their 30s and 40s, face enormous challenges after losing their spouses, including raising children, financial hardship, and emotional trauma. He called for the introduction of a dedicated social intervention programme to support widows across Ghana, especially those in remote communities who often have no support system. The Minority Leader further stated that widows frequently endure emotional and psychological torture and are sometimes denied their rights within their late husbands' extended families. He urged stronger public advocacy to educate widows about their rights under customary law. Reacting directly to Acheampong's remarks, Afenyo-Markin said the comments were on a "dangerous path" and suggested that the Bia East MP revisit his statement and reconsider his position.
