La inmortal española de Visier, por Leontxo García | El rincón de los inmortales 492
There are chess players who deserve far greater recognition than their sporting success or playing power, because they have contributed so much to chess culture and its dissemination. A clear example is that of Fernando Visier (Madrid, 1943), whose mere presence at a tournament always guaranteed that the trip—whether as a player, spectator, or journalist—would be interesting. Because in addition to his high caliber as a player—two-time Spanish champion and member of the national team in four Chess Olympiads, among other achievements—Visier shared his vast cultural background, his personal charm, and his profound strategic understanding, which is why he was always considered an excellent partner for post-game analysis. He therefore deserves to be immortalized, and the game in this video, played in the 1968 Spanish Championship (which he won), is very appropriate for achieving this. The aforementioned profound insight is very clear in it: Visier first gives up a long-range pawn to attack; Today's machines indicate that this gift is unrewarded, but 82 years ago, in a match between humans, it was more than enough. However, that's merely the foreshadowing of the great sacrifice of material that follows, a very difficult defense. His opponent, the outstanding Canarian player Juan Betancort, couldn't find it, and was immortalized by Visier with brilliance and precision.
