In August 2023, a video was made on a Solaris Urbino 18 Hybrid of Rheinbahn AG Dusseldorf. The video was made between Dusseldorf, Vennhauser Allee and Dusseldorf, Venloer Str. In 2010 and 2011 Rheinbahn AG Dusseldorf procured a total of seven buses of type Solaris Urbino 18 Hybrid. In addition to the hybrid buses from Solaris, the Rheinbahn also bought three hybrid buses from Hess (No. 8411-8413) and a fuel cell bus type Tecnobus Gulliver. This was part of a test series in which numerous cities in North Rhine-Westphalia tried out hybrid buses. In order to test the technology on a day-to-day basis and identify weak points, buses with hybrid technology were purchased across the state from 2010 onwards. The various drive technologies (parallel and serial hybrid technology) from the manufacturers (Mercedes, MAN, Solaris, Hess) were tested and the benefits for the transport company determined. According to the results, the hybrid buses of this generation have not yet paid off. They only use about 15% less fuel than modern diesel buses, but cost significantly more to purchase.
