The Funkhaus on Nalepastraße, located directly on the Spree River in Berlin-Oberschöneweide, was one of the most important media centres in the GDR. From here, GDR radio broadcast to all parts of the country since the early 1950s. What role did radio play in the SED system? How did control and censorship work – and where did pockets of freedom nevertheless emerge? In the new episode of »Places of East Germany«, historian Dr Ilko-Sascha Kowalczuk explores the history of this unique complex. At times, over 2,000 people worked here; in addition to unique studios, Nalepastraße is home to concert halls with acoustics that remain legendary to this day. News and crude propaganda were broadcast here – but also high-quality radio plays, jazz and classical music programmes. The youth station DT64 in particular developed into a cult programme in the 1980s. But what happened after 1989? Why did DT64, now an open and popular broadcaster, become a bone of contention in German reunification? The episode traces the history of broadcasting beyond the end of the GDR – and asks what the treatment of East German media tells us about the opportunities and failures of German reunification. »Places of East Germany« is the DDR Museum's new film series about (East) German locations, topics and events whose history continues to have an impact today. Historian Dr Ilko-Sascha Kowalczuk guides viewers through ‘lost places’, places of remembrance and places of the future, combining historical context with current developments and personal memories. The series will be released every two weeks from mid-January 2026 on the DDR Museum's YouTube channel and will search for clues on site. »Places of East Germany« stands for a lively, vivid and contemporary examination of GDR history and invites viewers on an exciting journey of discovery between the past and the future.
