Le campane di Taney, Dublino [IE]

Taney, Dublin [IE] - Christ Parish Church The present parish church in Taney was erected between 1815 and 1818 to replace the previous one, which was smaller and unable to accommodate the growing local population (particularly from Dundrum and Churchtown) at the time. The building was extended in 1965 during the time of the first Rector Trevor Hipwell. In 1824 it is reported that a bell was purchased for Taney, weighing about 250 kg. It was not until the late 1890s that the parish was provided with the current concert of 8 bells from the bell tower of St. George's Church in Hardwicke Street. The 8 bells, the work of the London bell foundryman Thomas II Mears, were cast in 1828 and donated to St. George's Parish by the architect Francis Johnston, designer of the building, and his wife Anne; the inauguration took place on 1 January 1829. The writer James Joyce mentioned these bells in his novel Ulysses: ‘The belfry of George's Church sent out constant peals...’. After the church building closed in 1990, the bells were dismantled and left in storage for almost 10 years, until the opportunity arose to give them a new life in the Taney bell tower, where they were hoisted up and inaugurated on 1 January 2000.
