New Zealand Island Home (House Tour)

Perched on a coastal ridgeline in the Bay of Islands, on a site accessible mainly by boat, this remarkable collaboration between Francis GP Architects and Supreme Builders delivers a family retreat shaped by its wild surroundings. Two cedar-clad wings sit either side of a covered outdoor room, with sliding shutters and deep verandas ensuring a sheltered side no matter the wind. With no road access, every decision came down to logistics: 2,000 cubic metres of earth excavated, no structural steel, and every timber member sized for the journey to site. The result is a masterfully crafted home where family can live together and apart through the seasons.
