Arequipa, Peru | Exploring South America’s Stunning White City

In this video, we explore the historic center of Arequipa, Peru, often called the White City and considered by many one of the most beautiful cities in South America. After living here for several days, we begin discovering the colonial heart of Arequipa, a UNESCO World Heritage city famous for its white volcanic stone architecture, impressive churches, monasteries, and lively plazas. We start at Monasterio Santa Teresa, a historic Carmelite monastery founded in the early 18th century, before walking deeper into the old town with its monumental colonial buildings built from white volcanic stone called sillar. We then visit the extraordinary Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, one of the most impressive churches in Peru, famous for its richly carved baroque facade. The next day takes us to the famous Plaza de Armas of Arequipa, the vibrant heart of the city, where we explore the magnificent Cathedral of Arequipa, admire traditional Peruvian women with baby alpacas, and visit the former bishop’s palace. Later, we continue through more hidden corners of the historic center, discover Casona Tristán del Pozo, admire views of the volcano Misti, and visit several more beautiful churches including Templo de San Agustín, Basilica de la Merced, and Parroquia Santa Marta. Arequipa has already completely impressed us — and this is only the beginning. In the next video, we will explore even more of this fascinating city, including the famous Santa Catalina Monastery.
