Yamaga City's Winter Festival, "Yamaga Lantern Romance: Hundred Flowers, Hundred Colors" This fantastical light festival, featuring bamboo lanterns and Japanese umbrellas, is held every Friday and Saturday night in February. As it's a nighttime event, non-locals must stay overnight to view it. It's human nature to want to enjoy both the hot springs and the event if possible. You can't just casually stay at a luxury hot spring inn or a quiet hot spring resort just to see the event. The Yamaga Onsen area boasts abundant hot spring water, and there are many inns and hotels in the city as well. Every inn and hotel has a large public bath, a private bath, and rooms with indoor or outdoor baths. The hotel I stayed at this time, of course, has rooms with indoor and outdoor baths, but all other rooms also have hot spring water. The bathrooms in the guest rooms are designed like those found in any home, but the hot spring water that flows from the faucets is the same as that found in a large public bath. The water quality is a simple alkaline spring that is Yamaga Onsen's signature skin-beautifying water and feels gentle on the skin. And the rates are wallet-friendly, starting from 7,400 yen including breakfast. This is a report of my stay at such a hotel.
