Live performance on The Grand Ole Opry 1955-08-27. Chuck Berry described Maybelline as a "hillbilly song" and it was very popular among country music fans in 1955. Marty Robbins rockabilly version reached number 9 on the country charts. The Grand Ole Opry was the most conservative of all the hillbilly shows in the 1950s but they allowed rockabilly singers as long as they did not use drums. Carl Perkins dream came true in 1956 when he sang Blue Suede Shoes on the Grand Ole Opry, but he was disappointed that he was not allowed to use his drummer.
