Diana, Roger, Snubby and Loony the dog are staying in a wonderful little seaside village called Rubadub, which has a whirlpool, a pier and, also, a secret submarine base. The inn where they are staying is full of interesting characters most of whom are entertainers on the local pier. When the children are joined by their friend Barney, they are very concerned about him, he has not been well and is desperate to find his long lost father. They are all delighted when Mr Marvel the magician offers to help Barney. At the same time, strange goings on in the night convince the friends that all is not as it seems.
