Defeating the Fear of Uncertainty

How Do I Know If I’m Saved? One of the most important spiritual questions a person can ask is this: How do I know if I’m saved? In this message, You Got Oil?, Jesus answers that question through the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1–13. All ten virgins looked the same on the outside. They shared the same testimony, carried the same lamps, had the same expectation, and waited in the same place for the bridegroom. Yet when the bridegroom arrived suddenly at midnight, only five were ready. The difference was not their lamp. The difference was their oil. The oil represents the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. This parable teaches that being around Jesus is not the same as belonging to Jesus. Church attendance, religious activity, and spiritual familiarity cannot replace a genuine relationship with Christ. The assurance of salvation is not found in appearance, but in possession. Scripture makes it clear that those who belong to Christ are indwelt by His Spirit. Many people ask, Am I really saved? Jesus warns that there is coming a moment when opportunity ends and eternity begins. When the door was shut, it was final. The foolish virgins knew about the bridegroom, but they were not ready for Him. This message calls for honest self-examination. How do I know if I’m saved? Do I simply have a lamp, or do I have oil? Are my life and faith powered by the Holy Spirit, or only by outward form? Our responsibility is not to determine when Jesus is coming, but to be ready when He does.
