Mt. Vernon, Illinois I South Illinois I Gateway to St. Louis & Chicago I 4K
Mount Vernon, Illinois is one of the bigger cities in Southern Illinois aside from Carbondale and cities in the Metro East region near St. Louis. It looks like a city that is a shell of its former self. The city was once a manufacturing hub from the late 19th to mid 20th century due in large part because of automobile manufacturing. Production peaked during World War I and World War II. Today, Mount Vernon, like several former industrial cities in the Midwest, has declined economically. Walking around downtown a few days ago and noticing the lack of development in that area was a clear indication of the state of the city. Hope you enjoy!!!
