Vinyl Skirting Heavy Tapered Lures with Diamond Dave
In this video, we met with Capt. Dave Bensko, better known as "Diamond Dave", out of Kona, Hawaii on his unique method of vinyl skirting on heavy tapered lures. He is most known for his 2018 Blue Marlin World Cup winning 760.5# fish, and he is a very talented Captain out of talent rich Kona, Hawaii. One of the major attributes of a good skirt job is how tight or flush they are against the skirt saddles to eliminate excess material that can impact how the lure performs. When it comes to vinyl skirting, this can be a difficult task especially when you're dealing with individual strands to not just get the skirting flush but also to create a "seamless" transition at the connection point where you glue both sides of the vinyl together to finish it off. Where this becomes even more difficult is on heavy tapered lures like the Marlin Magic "Pear" style heads (Captain's Choice, Bog Eye, Hibby) or the Moyes Blasters or, in this case, the Moyes Sumo. The heavy taper makes it increasingly difficult if not almost impossible to create both a seamless skirt job and also not have a bunch of excess material around the skirt saddles that wants to bulge outside the lowest taper point at the skirt saddle transition. This is where Diamond Dave's method comes into play, creating the most flush vinyl job on a heavy tapered lure that we've seen yet. While this method does take additional time, we thought it was a cool way to show that there's more than one way to vinyl skirt a lure, and if you are a perfectionist like Dave, this might be something you want to try out. At the very least, we are all learning something new here. Hope you all enjoy.
