11-Channel Immersive Microphone Array | Behind Immersed: Episode 3 - The Gray Array
GRAMMY®-nominated: Justin Gray | IMMERSED | Best Immersive Audio Album (For Your Consideration – Final Voting) This video explores the details of the 11-channel microphone array that played a crucial role in recording my upcoming album IMMERSED. 🔔SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE 🔔 🎙 11-Channel Microphone Array Setup: 7.0.4 Cariod Immersive Microphone Array. The Gray Array! This array consists of seven microphones on the lower layer and four on the upper layer, carefully designed to create a relationship between the source sound and the recording space. For this array, we used Schoeps CMC 6U bodies with MK4 cardioid capsules. 🔊 Why This Array? Over an extended period, my colleagues Alex Gamble, Ryan McNabb and I conducted extensive tests in this studio space (Humber College Recording Studio) to refine our approach. We tested numerous immersive microphone arrays and additional spatial recording techniques, in order to establish the acoustic behaviour in the room, and further refine aesthetic preferences in preparation for recording my album. For the primary 11-channel array, we opted for cardioid microphones to maintain a more focused, discrete capture. 📏 Precision & Placement: • Array height: 120 cm, established through listening tests. • Microphone spacing: Equidistant 89 cm placement to common center point. • Angles: Designed to mimic a Dolby Atmos speaker array (7.0.4), ensuring spatial accuracy for playback in Dolby Atmos listening environments. 🎼 How We Used It: 1️⃣ Capturing instruments in relation to the space, much like a classical recording approach. 2️⃣ Positioning musicians around the array for immersive ensemble recordings. 3️⃣ Overdubbing with full-array capture, allowing spatially accurate positioning in post-production. Capture for this array on this project was through Millennia preamps, recorded at 96kHz via the Avid MTRX into Pro Tools. 💡 This experience reinforced a fundamental truth in recording: it all starts with listening. Before any technical decisions are made, understanding the source sound and space is key to achieving the desired aesthetic.
