How to fight climate change and achieve net zero - Dr Kingsley Oturu
How to fight climate change and achieve net zero Dr Kingsley Oturu (Net Zero Specialist) [email protected] www.asdoonline.org.uk Achieving net zero: It is important that changes are made as a society to tackle the climate change crisis and reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Climate change comes as a result of carbon emissions being released into the atmosphere. These carbon emissions emanate from human behaviour such as goods/service consumption, transportation and feeding habits/practices within homes. Consequently, crucial changes need to be made by society to adapt and mitigate these climate change impacts. Carbon emissions come from important areas in society. These include consumption of goods/services, travel and Housing food/diet. When goods are consumed, carbon emissions are released throughout the product life cycle. During travel, fossil fuels such as petrol are burnt releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Use of electricity and burning of gas in homes contributes to carbon emissions. With food and diet, agricultural practices, seasonal effects and transportation of animal products contribute to carbon emissions. Effective solutions to the climate crisis require targeting sources of emissions. With regards to consumption of goods and services, efforts need to be made to purchase energy efficient/ green products and services. For example, buying A rated white goods/heat pumps. In the case of travel, societal efforts include using coaches, buses and electric public transport rather than air travel. With regards to housing, energy efficiency is proposed through use of renewable energy sources (such as solar panels/windmills), insulation and turning off lights when not needed. In the area of food and diet, efforts should be made by society to eat more plant-based diets. In summary, the climate crisis is a big challenge that is driven by carbon emissions. These carbon emissions are produced through human activities in society. By raising awareness, collaboration and making energy efficient choices in consumption, travel, housing, and food, carbon emissions can be reduced and net zero reached. #climate change #kingsley oturu #heatwave #netzero #Edinburgh #Global Climate Change
