French bread is very typical in Guatemala; you can find it in every bakery. And we like to eat it with our tamales, with some strained or refried beans, with ham, with stuffed chiles—anything we can think of, this bread goes well with. That's why today I'm teaching you how to prepare it at home. To make it, you'll need: All-purpose flour 454 grams / 16 ounces / 1 pound Dry yeast 15 grams / 1 tablespoon / 1/2 ounce Salt 6 grams / two half teaspoons Sugar 5 grams / 1 teaspoon Butter 30 grams / 1 ounce / 1 tablespoon Water 170 grams / 6 ounces / 3/4 cup Extra water (this amount will vary) 60 grams / 2 ounces / 1/4 cup As you work the dough, it will require more liquid, so the amount of extra water you add will depend on each dough. If you use strong or hard flour, it will require more water. In the end, you may end up with approximately 90 more grams of water. Bake at 380 degrees Fahrenheit or 195 degrees Celsius for approximately 12 minutes, but if you want the bread a little more toasted you can bake it for up to 20 minutes maximum.
