L’ultimo ghiacciaio dell’Appennino: quello che resta del Calderone

In the heart of the Gran Sasso National Park in Abruzzo, at 2,700 meters above sea level, lie the remains of the Calderone Glacier. These are traces of what was, until the 2000s, the last glacier in the Apennines. "After that, it was downgraded to a glacier-ice field," meaning an accumulation of ice that can last from a few years to many centuries, explains Professor Massimo Pecci, who has studied the glacial environment of the Apennines for many years. However, the changes to the terrain caused by the sliding ice could pose a risk to the Franchetti refuge, 400 meters below. "This year, the historic aquifer shifted, and we had to drill new holes. This had never happened before. This refuge is very fortunate because it has water, and this event was a bit worrying," says Luca Mazzoleni, mountaineer and longtime manager of the facility.
