This is a desert town that has turned its fate around — from the brink of being swallowed by sand to a cool pack of futuristic architectures, solar farms, and data centers. This transformation relies heavily on local people's wisdom and resolution. To survive a place where desert and river come toe to toe, they invented straw checkerboard to cage the desert in the 1950s, and the sheepskin raft to cross the river without proper wood 2000 years ago.
