E39 BMW Expansion Tank Replacement DIY (Cooling Overhaul Part 1 of 5)

Part 2, I installed a Lower Temperature Thermostat Part 3, I upgraded to an Electric Cooling Fan Part 4, I replace the Radiator Part 5, I install a custom aux fan The expansion tank is one of the many known issues on the E39 chassis, and mine was leaking. Luckily, this part is cheap and easy to replace. There are two different styles: 6 and 8 cylinder versions. The I6 cars (M52B25, M52B28, M54B25 and M54B30) have two barbs off the bottom while the V8 cars (M62B44 and M62B44TU) have one facing forwards. Don't skimp and buy a cheap one as you could end up stranded when it blows. You don't have to drain all the coolant, just siphon out enough to not spill everywhere. Keep the old level sensor and bleed screw as they could be useful backups in the future. After install, bleed the system like normal and enjoy your now more reliable BMW.
