South African Rugby Must Reinstate Restrictions on Springboks Demands former Bulls coach Jake White

White believes the Bulls, Sharks, Stormers and Lions are being left at a major disadvantage in the Investec Champions Cup, where they are expected to compete against some of Europe’s wealthiest clubs while regularly losing their best talent overseas. Before 2018, Springbok coaches could not select players based abroad, a policy similar to that used by the All Blacks and largely followed in Ireland. The rule ensured that the country’s leading players remained available for domestic teams and helped strengthen local competitions. However, when Rassie Erasmus became Springboks coach, those restrictions were removed. Since then, overseas-based players have become a key part of the national setup, with stars such as Cheslin Kolbe earning and maintaining Springbok selection while playing abroad. While White acknowledges the benefits for the national team, he argues that South African franchises have been forced to carry the burden.
