Every 15 minutes another truckload of refugees arrives at Tuzla Air Base. Close to 6,000 people are already settled in a tent camp stretching more than two kilometres along the runway, and tens of thousands more have fled Srebrenica ahead of the Bosnian Serb advance, leaving everything behind. For the new arrivals — mostly women, children and elderly — the most urgent concern is not shelter but the fate of their men. The Bosnian Serb army says it is holding all men of fighting age for interrogation, and the UN estimates at least 10,000 people are unaccounted for. EU envoy Carl Bildt has announced that the Bosnian Serbs agreed to grant Red Cross access to those detained, but as of Tuesday no visits had taken place. UNHCR and UNPROFOR are providing food, water and tents, with toilets and showers still under construction. A clinic staffed by local doctors treats heat exhaustion and dehydration. Giant Mi-26 helicopters are flying in 30 tons of aid each from Zagreb. With Žepa and Goražde now also under threat, Tuzla and Zenica are bracing for thousands more.
