Budget Eats: Sushant Vihar, Margao, South Goa, April 2025

Today, Maria and I are going to an old haunt for a quick lunch after some work in Margao Sushant Vihar restaurant is in Malbhat, right opposite the Carmelite Monastery in Margao town Google Maps location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ax7TfqU9GabBU... Sushant Vihar has been here for 40 years. It is a simple place with just 5 tables. But don’t be fooled by the humble ambience. The food at Sushant is like home cooked. Delicious Goan food at very good prices for those on a budget, like us We had leppo thali (Rs 100) and kingfish thali (Rs 200) You don’t need a lot of money to eat well in Margao. Sushant Vihar is typical of the inexpensive and homely meals you get in Margao town. Goans who come from all over Goa to shop in New Market and Malbhat, eat in such places. We were also happy because they asked if we want parboiled (ukde city) or white rice. Even the fancy restaurants don’t serve Goan parboiled red rice, which is more tasty with fish curry The fish thali had prawn curry, teesrio, kismur (dry prawns cooked salad), beans bhaji, sal kadi, salad, pickle, parboiled rice with kharem (salted dried fish), with fried leppo for Maria and fried kingfish for Lesley The kharem (salted dry fish) was very good. The curry was piping hot and was just superb. Teesrio was excellent. Everything was good. The kismur also. Simple Margao we get very good fish curry cheap. There are many places like this in Margao if you’re on a budget like us. You can eat well. We’re having teesrio, prawns, kismur, kingfish fry and ukde xitt (parboiled rice) for Rs 200 for kingfish thali and Rs 100 for leppo thali. Who needs frills? Just need good food.
