Lee Gap-cheol, known as a documentary photographer in the 1980s and 1990s, rose to prominence as a representative Korean photographer encompassing both art and documentary following his 2002 exhibition, "Conflict and Reaction." He has been a pioneer in promoting Korean photography both domestically and internationally since the 2000s, to the point where it has been said that Koo Bohnchang is the master of art photography and Lee Gap-cheol is the master of documentary photography. Lee Gap-cheol's photography was highly regarded both domestically and internationally for its strong sense of Koreanness, its powerful impression of "our land, our spirit, our belonging." Through these unique and original photographs, Lee Gap-cheol has consistently expanded his world.
