Since the Safavid era, when Twelver Shiism was declared the official religion of Iran, the country's religious structure has been highly centralized. The Shiite clergy became one of the main pillars of power, and any different thinking or religious criticism was severely suppressed. But this same religious pressure paved the way for the formation of new ideas. During the Afshari and Zand periods, political instability led to a decrease in ideological control, but during the Qajar era, political crises, the influence of foreign powers, and public discontent reached their peak. In such an atmosphere, Sayyid Ali Muhammad Bab emerged in 1260 AH (1844 AD) claiming to be "Babiyyah", a movement that soon developed into a serious religious movement. After the Bab's execution, two main currents emerged among his followers: one led by Mirza Yahya Nuri (Immortal Dawn) and the other led by his brother Mirza Husayn Ali Nuri, who later became known as Baha'u'llah. During his exile in Baghdad and then in Istanbul and Acre, Baha'u'llah claimed to be a new prophet and offered new teachings about the unity of religions, world peace and the equality of humans. It was here that the Baha'i faith was formed. During the reign of Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar, the Iranian government severely suppressed the Babis and then the Baha'is. Baha'u'llah was also permanently exiled from Iran due to his influence and teachings, but his faith gradually spread outside of Iran.
