What Dying From a Chronic Illness Looks Like

Dying from a chronic illness often looks different from dying from an acute illness like cancer. In this video, I explain the stair-step decline I often see with chronic illnesses like COPD, CHF, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and pulmonary fibrosis. A person may decline, improve, plateau, decline again, and sometimes go on and off hospice before reaching the final stage of life. I also explain the signs hospice nurses watch for when someone may be getting closer to death, including eating less, sleeping more, increased symptoms, physical decline, and needing more medication for comfort.
