This is the third and final part of our exploration of the feeling of homeland: we filmed in the heart of Europe, at the Russian-German production The Blizzard; in the Mediterranean Sea, on the boat of St. Petersburgers who, following Odysseus, tried to retrace the journey home among the Greek islands; and now, finally, we have arrived at the Butovo firing range in Moscow, a place where during the years of the Great Terror more than twenty thousand innocent people were shot in the name of the homeland. The protagonist of this conversation is Yan Rachinsky, the grandson of a member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, a “foreign agent,” and the head of the international Memorial society since 2018, which was dissolved in Russia five years ago. In 2022, together with the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties and Belarusian human rights defender Ales Bialiatski, Russia’s Memorial was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Yan Rachinsky accepted the prize on behalf of the organization. In his Nobel lecture, he said: “In modern Russia, no one’s safety can be guaranteed. But we know where the impunity of the state leads.” We spoke with Yan Rachinsky about where impunity leads, and about the relationship between memory and the sense of homeland. We met at the Butovo firing range — a place where each of us has someone to mourn. #tellgordeeva #rachinsky #memorial Contents: 00:00 The trilogy. An explanation. 03:15 “There was a Chekist dacha settlement here” — the history of the Butovo firing range in Soviet times 06:04 “To eliminate any possibility of society’s self-organization” — the idea behind the repressions 15:22 “Denunciations were never the cause of mass repressions” — what is wrong with the popular narrative 18:28 “Informants are a carefully guarded secret” 22:31 Vehicles marked “Bread,” in which people were poisoned with gas, and Putin at the Butovo firing range 27:42 “The only way to overcome trauma is to face it head-on” 34:09 “The taboo against killing has eroded” 38:11 “After Gorbachev, no one offered citizens the chance to be in charge of their country” 46:05 “1993: The end of illusions” 52:21 “The authorities and the special services were never in conflict with each other. That is an illusion” 57:39 “Terror is an inevitable consequence of the absence of choice” 1:00:06 “All this work is for the wastebasket” — how Rachinsky worked on Gosplan calculations and why he chose Memorial 1:08:13 “He was a White Army officer, he had no chance” — Gordeeva and Rachinsky visit their relatives 1:14:14 “People vanished into nowhere without any trace” — about the dispossessed peasants 1:16:34 “It can always get worse” 1:20:15 “From the file it is not even clear whether it was a man or a woman” — how foreigners were executed during the Great Terror 1:22:31 “I’m not going to back down. It’s not in my family’s nature” — why Rachinsky did not emigrate 1:28:05 “300 years is a time span that suits me” — when will anything change in Russia? 1:31:21 “I don’t rewrite the charges — there is never any truth in them” 1:36:28 “The human remains lay in five layers” — again about the Butovo firing range 1:44:08 “From 1939 to 1941, Great Britain fought Hitler alone” 1:46:58 How Yan Rachinsky, during his routine work, discovered that his grandfather had been sentenced to death 1:50:33 “One must not justify what is beyond justification” 1:55:47 “Did Christ ultimately lose — or not yet?” 1:57:41 “I do everything so that things will not get worse from here on” Katerina Gordeeva: https://t.me/skazhigordeevoy Instagram: / skazhigordeevoy Twitter: https://x.com/skazhigordeevoy
