Data Science: New Tricks for Economics (10.45 - 11.30 am) Economists routinely use data to answer quantitative questions. One important question that has become increasingly relevant with the advent of decision-making based on machine learning is whether discrimination according to race or some other personal characteristic inadvertedly occurs in approving mortgage applications. We will look at how economists armed with training in data science can approach this question from different angles using a well-known dataset of mortgage application data from a time period when such discrimination might have occurred. Speaker: Dr Denis Tkachenko Dr Denis Tkachenko’s research focuses on theoretical econometrics and its applications in macroeconomics and finance, and was published in the top five and top field economic journals. At NUS, he teaches classes in econometrics, forecasting and machine learning. He is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Economics, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
