Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira, 37, was exposed after allegedly scamming people in several Brazilian states by posing as an orphaned and seriously ill girl named Emily. The woman created fake profiles on social media and invented moving stories to gain sympathy and obtain donations. In Curitiba, Amanda allegedly deceived a group for about six months, claiming to have terminal cancer and using photographs and emotional accounts to gain the victims' trust. One of the people involved even got a tattoo of the name "Emily" in her honor. The fraud was discovered when some victims tried to visit the supposed girl in the hospital and were informed that there was no patient admitted with that name. According to investigations, Amanda had previously been arrested in Santa Catarina for living with a family for 14 months, presenting herself under a false identity as an adopted daughter. The suspect was charged with fraud and identity theft. However, the investigation related to the events in Paraná has not yet been concluded, due to initial flaws in the procedural steps.
