Title: The Prayer of the Intercessor Text: Deuteronomy 9:11–24 11. After forty days and forty nights had passed, the Lord gave me the tablets of stone, the two tablets of the covenant. 12. He said to me, “Arise, go down from here at once, for your people whom you brought out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they have turned away from the way I commanded them and have made for themselves a molded idol.” 13. The Lord also spoke to me, saying, “I have seen this people; behold, they are a stiff-necked people.” 14. “Do not hinder me; I will destroy them and wipe their name from the face of the earth, and I will make you a nation greater than they.” 15. So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain was on fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16. I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God, making for yourselves a molded calf and turning away from the way the Lord commanded. 17. So I took the two tablets in my two hands and threw them down before your very eyes I have broken it. 18. And as before, I fell on my knees before the Lord forty days and forty nights, eating neither bread nor drinking water, because you have done evil in the sight of the Lord and provoked Him to wrath, committing great sin. 19. I was afraid because the Lord was very angry and intended to destroy you. But the Lord heard my words even then. 20. The Lord was also angry with Aaron and intended to destroy him, so I prayed for Aaron even then. 21. I took your sin, the calf you made, burned it, pounded it, ground it into fine dust, and scattered the flour in the stream flowing down from the mountain. 22. You also provoked the Lord to wrath at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth Hattaah. 23. When the Lord made you depart from Kadesh-Barnea, He said, “Go up and take possession of the land I have given you.” But you disobeyed the command of your God, the Lord, and did not believe. You have not listened to that word. 24. From the day I knew you, you have always rebelled against the LORD.
