The East River Mountain Tunnel is 5,412-foot long tunnel that carries Interstate 77 traffic between West Virginia and Virginia. They started the tunnel on August 12, 1969. It was opened to the public five years later on December 20, 1974 after a ribbon-cutting ceremony. It cost $40 million to complete, at today's money adjusted to 2019, Inflation it would put it at $275,505,177.11 A Fun fact is that 49% of the tunnel is on the Virginia side, with the remaining 51% of the tunnel resides in West Virginia. And because of that they shared the cost of the project. Before opening of the Tunnel, travelers that cross the state line had to navigate the narrow, twisting, route old US 52 up and over the mountain. In the winter the road was closed down a lot due to treacherous conditions of ice and snow. The Big Walker Mountain Tunnel is a shorter cousin to this one. The tunnel is located about 20 miles South of this tunnel on I-77. Thank-you for all your comments and viewing the video. I have other videos I would like you to view.
