The sculpture conveyed not only a physical resemblance but also the inner world of the sitter. One ancient writer noted that in Rome, besides the citizens, there lived another people, made up of statues. Among the masterpieces of the Hermitage collection is a portrait of a Roman woman, the so-called "Syrian Woman" (160s).
