Deon Oosthuysen - Blue Lightning
Growing up as a passionate Blue Bulls supporter, there was only ever one right wing that mattered, Deon Oosthuysen. Hindsight and the wisdom that comes with age have since put this into perspective. There were fantastic wings playing provincial rugby in South Africa in the later 80s and early 90s. On the right wing, most notably James Small and also Chris Badenhorst from the Freestate. Oosthuysen didn't have the size of someone like Small, but he made up for it with electric pace, which made him very elusive. He could out sprint most opponents and he was a deadly finisher. Deon Oosthuysen played for Western Transvaal and Northern Transvaal (Blue Bulls) at provincial level. He was known for having a lot of pace and scored 85 tries in his first-class career, which was a record for any Northern Transvaal/Blue Bulls player. In addition to playing in 12 tour matches for South Africa, he was also an accomplished sevens player and was for a while coach of the South African sevens team in the late 1990s. He really was a joy to watch in his prime and I hope you enjoy this video. Thanks for watching!
