KBS 역사추적 – 조선판 킬링필드, 동래성에 무슨 일이 있었나 / KBS 20090131 방송

The remains of a man with his lower jaw sharply severed by a spear. The remains of a woman in her 20s, stabbed three times from above while sitting. The shattered skull of a child under the age of five, with marks from a musket piercing through the back. The skeletons unearthed at a subway construction site in Busan are horrifying. These remains have been discovered for the first time in 400 years. What on earth happened here? The Shocking Excavation Site of Dongnae Fortress June 2005, Suan-dong Station on Busan Subway Line 3. This is the former site of Dongnae Fortress. Sharply sliced skulls and punctured remains. Excavations conducted over three phases from 2005 to 2007 uncovered an estimated 81 to 114 remains. Numerous arrowheads, swords, spearheads, hilts, armor, helmets, and wooden wings were also discovered. Why were thousands of wooden poles, called mok-ik, found in moats? The previously unknown moat of Dongnae-eupseong Fortress, along with the mok-ik, surprisingly existed "underground" in the city center. The moat, built to defend the fortress, became a graveyard for the remains. What era and whose remains do these artifacts and remains belong to? Analysis of the Remains With the help of Professor Kim Jae-hyun, a specialist in ancient human remains at Dong-A University, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the remains. The analysis revealed that the remains excavated from Dongnae Fortress belonged to at least 59 men, 21 women, and one infant. Their teeth were intact. Dental analysis revealed that they were poorly nourished. Furthermore, height measurements revealed that they were relatively large compared to the Edo period in Japan at the time. Cranial analysis revealed distinct characteristics distinct from those of Japanese individuals. So, what was the age distribution of these individuals? The analysis revealed a wide range of ages, from their 20s to their 40s. Notably, the remains with holes were determined to belong to infants under the age of five. What happened at Dongrae Fortress? Faced with the elite Japanese troops, Konishi Yukinaga's unit, experienced through a century of civil war, the Joseon civilian and government forces were helpless. Panic erupted within the fortress walls. Up to 5,000 Koreans were killed. The Dongrae Fortress Martyrs' Painting records the fierce battle at Dongrae Fortress. It depicts the resistance of the magistrate Song Sang-hyeon and his people, who died fighting against the Japanese invasion at Dongrae Fortress on April 15, 1592, the 25th year of King Seonjo's reign. It showcases the national spirit of the Dongrae people, who resisted to the end in the face of a great national crisis. A closer look reveals two women from the roof of the Dongrae Fortress Martyrs' Painting, throwing roof tiles at the Japanese troops. What the Remains Tell Us Sharp wounds and holes were found on the skulls of the remains. The remains of a man with his lower jaw severed were identified as those of a man who had been struck head-on with a knife, then struck again while turning his head, and then struck again in the back of the head, killing him. The damaged remains vividly portray the scene of his murder. The remains of a young woman in her twenties. She was brutally murdered after being stabbed three times in the skull with a knife by an assailant from a high position while she was sitting down. The remains of a five-year-old child. A small hole is visible in the child's skull, indicating a bullet had entered from the back. A musket bullet powerful enough to penetrate armor pierced the child's head. Most of the remains are likely those of executions or murders following the battle. Was the Imjin War a War of Extermination of the Korean People? Even after the Jeongyu War in 1597, the massacre of Joseon soldiers and civilians continued. Not only those killed in action, but even the noses of living Joseon people were cut off. Another record is the Yeongsan Visit. The order was to kill anyone who resisted or fled. Why did they seek to exterminate the Korean people so brutally? After the Battle of Dongnae Fortress, the Japanese soldiers dumped countless Korean bodies and even their daily necessities into the moat. Fourteen years later, Yi An-nul, who was appointed governor of Dongnae, recorded the horrific situation in a poem. From "Dongnaemaengha Yugam," a poem by Yi An-nul, governor of Dongnae, written in 1608: ...The entire town was drenched in blood within the fortress...We cannot count the number of those who died, leaving no one to mourn. The Imjin War was so brutal that it could be described as a policy of extermination of the Korean people. The remains of Dongnae Fortress, a Joseon version of the Killing Fields, have been revealed to the world after 400 years, bearing vivid testimony to this tragedy.
