The Gordon River Cruise

The Gordon River Cruises operate out of Strahan on the West Coast of Tasmania. There are different options available but the one shown in this video is probably the most popular. For the ticket price you get a voyage that lasts for around 6 hours and covers 120 km of Macquarie Harbour, a guided tour of the historic Sarah Island penal settlement, lunch and a cruise up the Gordon River. Weather conditions on the West Coast are variable, to put it mildly, so prepare to rug up and stay dry although the interiors of the boat we took were warm and would've offered plenty of shelter if needed. Thankfully the weather was kind to us on this trip. The surreal reflections of the Gordon River (which are best seen in calm conditions) were a highlight but the whole day was very enjoyable and the tour of Sarah Island was entertaining. Henty Dunes, found just outside of Strahan, are a vast expanse of sand dunes stretching about a kilometre inland from the shore and it's a great place to take kids. Bring a sand board, you'll have a blast - but be prepared for a steep climb to get to the top of the dunes. Music by Electric Den Photography by Don Hawley
