I stop for coffee, track down some regional food from Singkawang over in Kalimantan and spend a good chunk of the walk talking about language and one little phrase that explains so much about this place, murah senyum. It is a big part of why Indonesians smile the way they do and the longer you spend here the harder it is to ignore. I meet some wonderful locals along the way and stumble into a ceremony I was not expecting. By the end I am thinking about something I cannot shake, how people with so much less than us seem so much happier.
