Linguaggio e natura umana da Chomsky all’A.I.

Language has always been central to reflections on human nature. Since classical times, philosophers have considered language one of the essential distinguishing features between humans and other animals. This line of thought, which sees language as the defining feature of human nature, includes the reflections of Chomsky, the author who not only consistently asserted the specificity of human language but also theorized how human intelligence is structured by language. From this perspective, Artificial Intelligence provides a crucial testbed. In particular, systems like Large Language Models amaze not only for their ability to generate language, but also because they exhibit behaviors that closely resemble unique human traits: lies, confabulations, and self-interested reasoning. What can this tell us about the power of language? And what about the boundary between human and nonhuman? Biography Valentina Cardella is a full professor of Philosophy of Language at the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of Messina. His research interests include language in psychopathology, pathologies of beliefs and delusions, narratives and confabulations, and philosophy of mind. His publications include: Language and Schizophrenia (Routledge, 2018), The Logic of Madness (Corisco, 2018), Psychopathology and Philosophy of Mind (with A. Gangemi, Routledge, 2021), and Reasoning in Psychopathology (with A. Gangemi, Routledge, 2023). He edited the new translation of Wittgenstein's Blue Book (2022) for Mimesis.
