Can near-death experiences change our understanding of life, grief, and what might exist after death? Manuel Ramos researched NDEs to create his show, Life in a Second, and during that process, his view of death was profoundly transformed. In this interview, Manuel Trinidad Ramos del Pino shares how the testimonies of people who have had a near-death experience helped him contemplate loss from a different perspective. Through books, documented cases, and accounts of NDEs, he began to wonder if there is life after death and if our deceased loved ones continue to be close to us in some way. One of the most moving moments is the appearance of a small paper boat during rehearsals. Manuel interpreted it as a sign from his friend Rafa, who passed away years earlier and was connected to the world of boats. The play also pays tribute to two other friends and to his father, whose death caused him to go through a very difficult period of mourning. Life in a Second is a one-man musical theater performance inspired by the phases typically described in a near-death experience (NDE): out-of-body experience, self-observation, transition to enlightenment, encounter with guides, life review, and heightened awareness. A single actor plays several characters to tell the story of Lázaro, a singer who has a near-death experience and takes a profound look back on his life. 👤 WHO IS MANUEL RAMOS? Manuel Trinidad Ramos del Pino was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on August 17, 1977. At 18, he moved to Madrid to study acting at Bululú 2120 and later at RESAD (Royal School of Dramatic Art). He also trained in the Meisner technique with Javier Galitó-Cava. For over 25 years, he has performed on stage in productions such as Grease, Billy Elliot, We Will Rock You, and 101 Dalmatians. In 2013, he founded ConUnCantoEnLosDientes (With a Song in Your Teeth). His show, Lo tuyo y lo mío (Yours and Mine), ran for approximately 400 performances, and Manuel participated in nearly 900 performances of Billy Elliot.
